On the Hadronuclear Origin of PeV Neutrinos Observed with IceCube    [PDF]

Kohta Murase, Markus Ahlers, Brian C. Lacki
We consider implications of recent IceCube observations for hadronuclear (pp) scenarios of extragalactic neutrino sources such as starforming galaxies, intergalactic shocks and active galaxies. We stress the importance of the connection between the extragalactic neutrino and gamma-ray backgrounds. These scenarios require hard spectra with Gamma<2.2 and imply that sources should contribute >30% to the diffuse gamma-ray background in the 100 GeV range. We show that these sources may be luminous enough to generate the observed neutrino background, and we investigate whether they can provide a neutrino cutoff around PeV energies suggested by the observations.
