We show that magnetic fields generated during inflation gives rise to a
constant mode in the Bardeen potential after inflation, in the radiation era,
which is proportional to the magnetic scalar anisotropic stress. The ratio of
this constant mode of the Bardeen potential to the background curvature grows
in the radiation era, with the fatal consequence of spoiling the homogeneity
and isotropy of the Friedmann Lemaitre (FL) Universe. This happens even if
back-reaction on the background metric is negligible during inflation, and
severely constrains magnetogenesis mechanisms operating during inflation.
