We review the main cosmological backgrounds of gravitational waves accessible
to detectors in space sensitive to the range $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-1}$ Hz, with a
special emphasis on those backgrounds due to phase transitions or networks of
cosmic strings. We apply this to identify the scientific potential of the
NGO/eLISA mission of ESA, regarding the detectability of such cosmological
backgrounds.
